Piano Special: The Black and White Of It
72:00
photo: Esbjorn Svensson

This month’s special is on jazz piano in many forms. These tracks ( to my knowledge) are all unreleased and for the most part excellent fidelity. Some of the tracks have some radio interference noise and there is one loud buzz during the Dave Burrell piece. As always, The Curator suggests you support these artists by purchasing their commercially available products.

1. E.S.T. “Elevation Of Love”
Royal Festival Hall, London Jazz Festival, 14 Nov 2003

Esbjorn Svensson: piano
Dan Beflund: bass
Magnus Ostrom: drums

The untimely death of this exceptional gifted piano player earlier in 2008 makes this live recording even more poignant.

2. Myra Melford “unknown title”
Kito, Bremen, Germany, 20 March 1998

Myra Melford: piano

A very angular solo piano Monk-ish type number that even veers into the avant garde.

3. Bobo Stenson Trio “There Comes A Time”
Saskatel Jazz festival, Canada July 2000

Bobo Stenson: piano
Anders Jormin: bass
Jon Christensen: drums

4. Dave Burrell “Stepping Out”
Blues Alley, Washington DC , date unknown

Dave Burrell: piano

5. The Bad Plus “Girl From Ipanema”
Dakota Bar, St Paul MN, 21 August 2002

Ethan Iverson: piano
Reid Anderson: bass
David King: drums

This group has taken some critical bashing because of their “pop” stylings and unusual cover material. However, I find them to have an unusual approach to the trio format and their arrangements are inventive.

6. Paul Bley Trio “unknown title”
Hamburg , Germany, 20 March 1994

Paul Bley” piano
Furio DiCastri: bass
Tony Oxley: drums

This date also featured saxophonist John Surman who does not join them until later in the set.

7. Egberto Gismonti “unknown title”
Crawley England, 1991

Egberto Gismonti: piano

A wonderful, high energy solo number from this Brazilian multi-instrumentalist.

8. Marilyn Crispell “unknown title”
Location unknown, Sept 1998

Marilyn Crispell: piano

9. Uri Caine “Goldberg Variations”
Koln, Germany 1 April 2000

Uri Caine: piano

A short segment of Caine’s unusual arrangement of Bach’s classic which alternates between solo piano and chamber orchestra.

10. John Taylor Trio “unknown title”
London?, 2002

John Taylor: piano
Marc Johnson: bass
Joey Baron: drums

From his 60th birthday celebration.

11. Howard Riley Trio “Cartridge”
Berlin Jazztage, 1972

Howard Riley: piano
Barry Guy: bass
Tony Oxley: drums

A long excerpt from this under recorded and underrated pianist and improv group.

Rare Music Curator presents podcast #20 Elvis Costello: The Other Side Of Summer

Rare Music Curator presents podcast #20: Elvis Costello: The Other Side Of Summer

In my opinion, Elvis Costello is the finest songwriter and singer of the past 30 years. Able to do strong work in many styles from rock to country to classical, Costello’s music has remained consistently good over the course of decades now and has released many incredibly satisfying albums. On this month’s podcast we hear him in concert and in early demo settings that reveal another side to his artistry. The Rare Music Curator never condones the sale of this material at any time and encourages you to purchase this artists commercial products.

1. Mystery Dance
Winterland Arena, San Francsico 1978
This was his first tour of America with the original band of The Atrractions.

2. Big Boys
From “I Stand Accused” bootleg Bethlehem PA 12 April 1979

3. The Beat
Winterland, SF 1978

4. Green Shirt
From I Stand Accused

5.Opportunity
From I Stand Accused

6. Radio Soul
From Demos around 1975. This was from material recorded prior to his first album. This song later turned into “Radio Radio” with a much fiercer, punkier feel. It isn’t clear to me if this was recorded with the northern California band, Clover who backed him on his first album. Incidentally, some of the members of that band later were part of Huey Lewis and The News.

7. I Don’t Want To Go To Chelsea
From Winterland 1978

8. Knockin On Heavens Door
From demos. Although not one of my favorite Bob Dylan songs, it is interesting to hear Elvis’ rendition.

9. Girls Talk
From I Stand Accused
This track was written by Dave Edmunds and appears on Elvis’ “Taking Liberties” release as a studio version. This one is live.

10. Big Light
From King Of Americana ( electric) bootleg 1985
This two disc bootleg set was done around the time of “King Of America” and features one disc of acoustic songs and one of electric.

11. Brilliant Mistake
From King Of America ( acoustic) 1985

12. The Other Side Of Summer
Melbourne, Australia 17 July 2002
Not excellent fidelity on this live set but was one of my favorite Costello songs from this period.

13. Come To Me
With Steve Nieve
The location and date is unclear on this set with his long time keyboardist but it could be from 1999m possibly New York.

14. Beyond Belief
From Italy 1994, possibly 19 July 1994 Rome

15. Poor Napoleon
With Bill Frisell 1995
Unclear if this is from their “Deep Dead Blue” album but it is around the same time.

16. Distorted Angel
With Steve Nieve 1999?

17. Little Palaces
From King Of Americana ( acoustic)

18-20. Kinder Murder/ Less Than Zero/ Rocking Horse Road
1994 Italy

21. Pump It Up
From I Stand Accused
When I’ve seen Elvis his final song was always this.

The Rare Music Curator presents podcast #19 Eric Dolphy

Rare Music Curator presents podcast #19
                Eric Dolphy

                approx 64 minutes

This month’s feature is on some extremely rare music by the great, late jazz man, Eric Dolphy.
The tracks come from a variety of sources including a very rare session that Dolphy himself recorded on a reel to reel tape deck in his Los Angeles home in 1954 with Clifford Brown and his band at the time. The fidelity is not that great on some of the material here but hopefully you will enjoy the special privilege of hearing music that has rarely, if ever, been heard before.

                1. “Miss Ann” by the Eric Dolphy Quintet
Live at the Gaslight Inn, New York City 7 Oct 1962

                Eric Dolphy: alto sax
                Ed Armour: flugelhorn
                Herbie Hancock: piano
                Richard Davis: bass
                Edgar Bateman: drums

                2. Unknown Original
Recorded by Dolphy at his home in Los Angeles, 1954
                Eric Dolphy: alto sax
                Clifford Brown: trumpet
                Harold Land: tenor sax
                Richie Powell: piano
?:drums ( it is not clear if this was Max Roach who also played that day)

                3. “Oleo” by the Eric Dolphy Quartet
                Munich, Germany, 1 Dec 1961

                Eric Dolphy: bass clarinet
                McCoy Tyner: piano
                Regiie Workman: bass
                Mel Lewis: drums

Evidently this was a jam session with Tyner joining in on piano at the time.

                4. “There’ll Never Be Another You”
                Los Angeles, 1954

                Clifford Brown: trumpet
All other personnel unknown but could be members of his group at the time: Morrow, Powell, Roach, etc.
Eric Dolphy does not play on this track but did engineer the recording.

                5. “Mr. P.C.” by the John Coltrane Quartet with Eric Dolphy
Birdland, New York City 9 Feb 1962

                Eric Dolphy: alto sax
                John Coltrane: tenor sax
                McCoy Tyner: piano
                Jimmy Garrison: bass
                Elvin Jones: drums

                6. “Left Alone” by the Eric Dolphy Quintet
Gaslight Inn, New York City, 7 Oct 1962

                Eric Dolphy: flute
                Ed Armour: flugelhorn
                Herbie Hancock: piano
                Richard Davis: bass
                Edgar Bateman: drums

I Want To Be The Drone

This month I have selected artists that use drone as a vehicle for their musical works. Not all of the artists represented here are strictly drone artists but the pieces here have an hypnotic buzz to them that seems to cross musical boundaries. I also “blended” many of the pieces together so that when one tune was coming to an end I would fade the other song in and play them both for a few minutes. The quality is generally pretty good here although there are some rough spots and hiss in places. Most of these are excerpts of longer works.

As far as I know all of these pieces are unreleased although I am not entirely certain about the Oliveros or Terry Riley works. The Curator does not condone the sale of this material at any time and suggests that you support your favorite artists by buying their commercially available products.
