I Want To Be The Drone

This month I have selected artists that use drone as a vehicle for their musical works. Not all of the artists represented here are strictly drone artists but the pieces here have an hypnotic buzz to them that seems to cross musical boundaries. I also “blended” many of the pieces together so that when one tune was coming to an end I would fade the other song in and play them both for a few minutes. The quality is generally pretty good here although there are some rough spots and hiss in places. Most of these are excerpts of longer works.

As far as I know all of these pieces are unreleased although I am not entirely certain about the Oliveros or Terry Riley works. The Curator does not condone the sale of this material at any time and suggests that you support your favorite artists by buying their commercially available products.

This month we feature jazz from The Netherlands. Known for it's humor and high caliber of musicianship, Jazz in Holland has flourished since the 1960's. Spearheaded for decades by such luminaries as Willem Breuker, Misha Mengelberg and Han Bennink and championed on Radio Nederland by the great Mike Du Ruyter, a very unique form of improvised music has developed and forwarded by the next generation of Dutch jazz figures such as Wolter Wierbos, Ernst Reijseger, Tobias Delius and many others. The Dutch are famous for collaborting as well and this is evidenced on this podcast by a few tracks featuring musicians from outside of that country. Most of these unreleased recordings were sourced from European Radio broadcasts and as always, this program
is for historical and personal use only. Sale of this material is never condoned. We suggest you support these artists by buying their commercially available material. And another goiod resource is the book by Kevin Whitehead, "New Dutch Swing".

This months feature is on "jam bands". While being somewhat vague as to what a "jam band" actually is, the presenation here focuses on a jazz setting with the drums in a more danceable rock context. Lots of stretching out of course and some bands veer closer to the jazz feeling than others. There are many I left out like Phish, Grateful Dead, Allman Bros, Charlie Hunter, John Scofield and others who might also have fallen into this category. Down the road perhaps I will include those groups. Remember, these are unreleased and live recordings presented for your personal and historical interest only. They are never to be sold and as always I urge you to support your favorite artists by purchasing their commercially available product.
